All-Colorado Critique & Rating — June 4, 2013 deadline
All members of CHSPA are eligible to have their student medium critiqued, and there is no additional cost. All our contests are provided when you become a member of CHSPA. Actually, we calculate that All-Colorado critiques and Best of Colorado individual entries cost about $65 for each medium entered, so your entire membership fee covers our major contests. All other CHSPA initiatives are funded by revenue from J-Day each October.
Last year, only about 60 percent of our members submitted their media for critiques, and these are critiques equivalent to national critiques which cost $100 or more. It’s quick and easy to enter. Check out the instructions below for the 2012–13 critique.
The All-Colorado Awards are designed to provide a critique of each yearbook, newspaper, video broadcast, andwebsite submitted, along with honoring those media that meet a high standard of excellence. The CHSPA board has approved the judging rubrics for Newspaper critique book — All-Colorado 2013, Yearbook critique book — All-Colorado 2013 , Video Media critique book — All-Colorado 2013 and Website critique book — All-Colorado 2013 (our newest critique), so all our members will know exactly how they will be judged. The first All-Colorado Awards were presented at J-Day 2011, and replaced the Sweepstakes awards (which were derived by adding up individual award points).
All the 2012 ratings of 2011-12 entries can be found by downloading this spreadsheet.
The entry form and instructions are a one-page document you may download here: All-Colorado entry and instructions 2013. As always, be sure Acrobat is not in Preview Mode to properly view and fill in this interactive PDF. Entry forms should be printed and mailed (to 9253 Sori Lane, Highlands Ranch CO 80126) along with your yearbook or newspapers. For video and website, simply attach a copy of the entry form to an email to jpkjournalism@gmail.com
The postmark deadline for the 2012–13 All-Colorado Critique and Rating is Tuesday, June 4, 2013.
Formerly, only three media in each classification were honored with Sweepstakes awards. In the All-Colorado model, any medium that meets the highest standards consistently will be honored. We are pleased to be modeling our system on the one used by the Kansas Scholastic Press Association. At J-Day 2012, we honored 10 newspapers, 11 yearbooks and 1 video broadcast with our All-Colorado awards.
Entering this assessment is easy: Yearbooks send their latest volume; newspapers send three complete issues, one from first semester and two from second semester; video media send three programs, illustrating the range of programming provided; and websites simply submit the url of the site.
We have not done away with individual contests. In fact, please check the “Best of Colorado” page on this site for the contest rules, first approved by the CHSPA board in January, 2011.
